All Sports Los Angeles Film Festival

Whether it is a dramatic or comedic piece, we want screenwriters and filmmakers to share their great stories in regards to the world of sports. We felt that creating this festival would give the many sports fanatics out there an outlet for their love of competition.

Some people have asked us to define “sports.” Well, we want to include any subject matter that deals with mental and physical competition for the sake of winning a prize. So we’re ready to watch and read any stories from auto racing to badminton and spelling bees to chess.

The festival will be held at Raleigh Studios on July 10th and 11th.

You’ve got to be crazy to be a Cubs fan, and a little bit crazier to be a Ballhawk–one of the glove-wearing true believers who faithfully patrol the streets just beyond Wrigley Field’s hallowed ivy-covered walls in the hope of catching an out-of-the-park clout, preferably on the fly. Mike Diedrich’s documentary takes an affectionate, amusing, and at times poignant look at this only-in-Chicago obsession and the singular personalities who pursue it: undisputed king Moe Mullins (with over 4,000 lifetime catches), exuberant “rookie” George Field, controversial maverick Super Dave Davison, and many more. The film’s specialized subject-matter provides a unique, oblique angle that illuminates sports fandom, the special agonies and ecstasies of Cub fandom, and larger issues that verge on the (gulp) downright philosophical. Congratulations!  Your film, “Ballhawks,” has been chosen to screen at the Athens International Film and Video Festival, which takes place April 23 – 29, 2010. Its taken us longer than anticipated to make decisions, because of the high volume of entries this year.

Ever Wonder what Ballhawks do in the winter?

76 days til the home opener but the Ballhawks are ready!

I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a documentary about the Wrigley Field ballhawks, tittled appropriately enough, Ballhawks. Filming took place a few years ago before the bleacher expansion. Editing, promoting and getting MLB approval has taken up most of the time since then.

The film’s in the can now and it’s being shopped around but no guarantee it will ever see the silver screen. Still, it’s made it as far as getting an entry in IMDB and has been submitted to several film festivals, among them SXSW, Sundance and Tribeca. And with Bill Murray doing the narration, it’s got some star power, so who knows…

Anyway, the title link above (and here) should take you to a somewhat humorous trailer for the movie. Thankfully, we got it done in one take…

With final approval from both Major League Baseball and the Chicago Cubs, Ballhawks has a few minor editorial changes and will be ready for Film Festival and other special screenings.
